How to Translate Custom Liquid and Third-Party App Text with the Ciwi Switcher
Enable the storefront switcher, run Translate v4 with Custom Liquid, then verify Judge.me, Loox, bundle apps, and theme snippets in each target language.
Custom Liquid snippets and third-party app widgets often sit outside the usual product or page fields. Ciwi handles them through the Custom Liquid pipeline in Translate v4. The Switcher is how you confirm those strings actually appear in the right language on the live storefront.
What counts as custom Liquid or third-party app text
Typical examples include:
- hardcoded copy inside theme Custom Liquid blocks or snippets
- storefront widgets from review apps such as Judge.me or Loox
- bundle or upsell apps that render offer titles, tier labels, or button text on product or cart pages
- other app blocks that inject visible text into the theme but do not map cleanly to a single Shopify content module
This workflow is about shopper-visible storefront text, not app admin settings or checkout-only surfaces that never appear in the theme.
Before you start
Make sure these basics are in place:
- The target language is added on the Language page.
- The Ciwi switcher is configured in the app and added to your Shopify theme.
- You know which templates show the apps or Custom Liquid blocks you care about, such as product detail, collection, cart, or a landing page section.
If the switcher is missing from the theme, fix that first. You need a reliable way to change locale on the storefront before you can judge whether app or Liquid copy translated correctly.
Step 1: Enable and place the switcher
Open the Switcher page in Ciwi and save the language behavior you need. Then add the Ciwi switcher app block in the theme editor where shoppers can find it.
For full wiring steps, see How to enable the language and currency switcher.
Step 2: Create a Translate v4 job with Custom Liquid enabled
Open Translate v4 and configure the run:
- select the target language or languages
- include the Shopify modules you still need, such as products, theme text, or navigation
- turn on Custom Liquid so pending custom or third-party storefront text is included
- choose the AI model and overwrite behavior that fit this run
Review the credit estimate before you confirm. Custom Liquid coverage can increase the estimate because it pulls in additional pending storefront strings beyond the standard module list.
Step 3: Review important strings in Manage Translation
When the job finishes, open Manage Translation and spot-check high-visibility copy before you publish. Prioritize:
- review widget headings, empty states, and call-to-action labels
- bundle offer names, discount descriptions, and button text
- Custom Liquid blocks that appear on your main product or homepage templates
Use glossary entries first if brand terms or product names repeat inside app widgets.
Step 4: Publish the target language
Return to the Language page and publish the target language when you are satisfied with the saved translations. Unpublished languages are a common reason why the storefront still looks untranslated after a successful job.
Step 5: Validate on the storefront with the switcher
Use the switcher the way a shopper would, not only the Shopify admin preview language selector.
- Open a page that contains the app or Custom Liquid block, such as a product page with Judge.me or Loox, or a product page with a bundle offer.
- Switch to the target language with the Ciwi switcher.
- Refresh once if the theme or app loads content asynchronously.
- Check desktop and mobile layouts.
- Repeat for each market-specific theme layout you actually sell through.
Suggested check pages
| Area | What to verify | | --- | --- | | Product page + Judge.me | review section titles, rating labels, and write-a-review prompts | | Product page + Loox | gallery labels, review prompts, and widget headings | | Product or cart + bundle app | offer titles, tier names, savings copy, and add-to-cart buttons | | Custom Liquid section | hardcoded headings, badges, and promotional lines in that block |
If text still looks untranslated
Work through these checks in order:
- Language not published: publish the target language on the Language page.
- Custom Liquid not included: create a new v4 job with Custom Liquid enabled.
- Wrong template or market: the block may exist only in one theme section or market layout.
- App loads text after first paint: reload the page after switching language, then test again.
- Non-storefront source: some apps keep merchant-facing settings in their own admin and only expose part of the copy through Liquid on the storefront.
If one widget still looks wrong while the rest of the page is translated, note the page URL, app name, and language, then contact Ciwi support from inside the app.
How this fits the rest of the workflow
Custom Liquid and third-party app text is optional, but it is often what makes a multilingual store feel complete. Standard modules handle most Shopify-native content; the switcher is the final check that review apps, bundle widgets, and theme snippets follow the language your shopper selected.
