Check language and region signals for consistency

The store serves several markets, and the merchant suspects some hreflang pairs point to pages that never point back. In this case, the immediate task is to check language and region signals for consistency. The workflow should verify that each declared version returns the reciprocal declaration and that the codes match the content actually served.

Act as a Shopify operations specialist.
Help me check language and region signals for consistency.
My store context is [describe the business, products and target audience].

My scope is [specify the affected products, pages, customers or reporting period]. Use these inputs: [every language and region version of each page with its URL, the hreflang declarations each version returns, the markets the merchant serves, the fallback the store uses, and the canonical target of each version]. Confirm for each declaration that the URL it names returns the full set of versions including itself, that the language and region code matches the content actually served on that URL, and that no version declares a canonical pointing outside the group, marking one-way, self-only and mismatched declarations as unresolved.
Return a URL-level diagnosis with evidence and follow-up checks, listing unmatched or self-referencing signals for the specified task.
Show the relevant evidence or before-and-after examples and explain how I can verify the result.
If essential data is missing, ask for it and mark unsupported conclusions as unknown.
Do not invent metrics, product claims or customer facts.
For any publication, message, account or store change, use only connected tools within my explicitly authorized scope and report success only after verification; otherwise provide the draft or proposed steps.

How to solve

A recommended resolution workflow

Split the work into input, judgment, and deliverable phases. Verify each step's output before moving to the next.

01

Step 1

Gather every language and region version of each page with the URL it is served on, the hreflang declarations each version returns, the markets the merchant serves, the fallback the store uses and the canonical target of each version.

02

Step 2

Confirm for each declaration that the URL it names returns the full set of versions including itself, that the language and region code matches the content actually served on that URL, and that no version declares a canonical pointing outside the group, marking one-way, self-only and mismatched declarations as unresolved.

03

Step 3

Deliver a URL-level diagnosis with evidence and follow-up checks listing the unmatched or self-referencing signals with the declaration and the response behind each, then confirm that the versions counted in each group equal the live versions for that page and recheck every unresolved pair after the fix.

FAQ

Common questions when running this scenario

Cover decision rules, frequent misunderstandings, and required inputs so the team aligns on prerequisites before execution.

What happens when only one side declares the pair?

The pair is unresolved. Reciprocity requires both URLs to return the full set, so a one-way declaration is reported together with the URL that failed to answer rather than accepted as a valid pair. A version that declares only itself is reported the same way, since it says nothing about the others.

Is a fallback declaration needed?

Only where the merchant really serves unmatched visitors with a selector or a default page; where no such destination exists, the declaration adds a target that cannot be verified. The check records whether a fallback is actually served before judging the group, so its absence reads as a deliberate choice.

Can a version that redirects be declared?

Declare the final destination instead. A declaration that resolves through a redirect returns the target's signals rather than the declared URL's, so the group looks self-consistent while pointing somewhere else. Where the redirect is intentional, the target is recorded as the version and the old address leaves the group.
