Detect sustained increases in cart abandonment

Carts are being left behind more often, but nobody can say when the increase began or whether it is still ongoing. In this case, the immediate task is to detect sustained increases in cart abandonment. The workflow should produce conversion alert rules and diagnostic next steps, triggered only when a rise holds across consecutive periods.

Act as a Shopify operations specialist.
Help me detect sustained increases in cart abandonment.
My store context is [describe the business, products and target audience].

My scope is [specify the affected products, pages, customers or reporting period]. Use these inputs: [the definition of an abandoned cart with the observation window, the identifier used to follow a cart, the baseline abandonment value per segment, the segments to watch, and the treatment of test carts and carts emptied by the shopper]. Raise an alert only where the abandonment value for a segment exceeds its baseline by the margin the merchant states and holds across the consecutive periods named, excluding from the count any cart that was emptied, any test cart and any cart still inside the observation window.
Return conversion alert rules and diagnostic next steps with the baseline confirmed against the merchant's records for the specified task.
Show the relevant evidence or before-and-after examples and explain how I can verify the result.
If essential data is missing, ask for it and mark unsupported conclusions as unknown.
Do not invent metrics, product claims or customer facts.
For any publication, message, account or store change, use only connected tools within my explicitly authorized scope and report success only after verification; otherwise provide the draft or proposed steps.

How to solve

A recommended resolution workflow

Split the work into input, judgment, and deliverable phases. Verify each step's output before moving to the next.

01

Step 1

Define what counts as an abandoned cart, meaning a recorded cart with no matching order inside the observation window the merchant sets, then record the identifier used to follow a cart, the baseline abandonment value, the segments to watch, and the treatment of test carts and of carts emptied by the shopper.

02

Step 2

Raise an alert only where the abandonment value for a segment exceeds its baseline by the margin the merchant states and holds across the consecutive periods named, excluding from the count any cart that was emptied, any test cart and any cart still inside the observation window.

03

Step 3

Deliver conversion alert rules and diagnostic next steps naming the segment, the baseline, the margin and the checks to run next, such as the checkout and payment conditions and the error records for the affected periods, then replay the rules against the supplied cart and order records and report how many periods each alert would have stayed open.

FAQ

Common questions when running this scenario

Cover decision rules, frequent misunderstandings, and required inputs so the team aligns on prerequisites before execution.

When does a cart count as abandoned?

A cart counts as abandoned when the merchant's observation window closes with no order matching its identifier. Until that window closes the cart is open, and counting it early makes recent periods always look worse; the window length is recorded with the rule, because a longer window will always show a lower abandonment value.

Why exclude carts still inside the window?

A cart inside the observation window has not yet had the chance to convert, so including it inflates the most recent period and creates an alert that disappears on its own. Those carts are counted as open and reported separately; the alert uses only carts whose window has closed, which is also what makes periods comparable.

Which checks follow the alert?

The defined next steps run first: confirm the cart and order records for the period, then check the checkout and payment conditions, the shipping costs shown and any error records in the same window. Only after those are cleared does the investigation move to page or traffic causes, so a payment fault is not mistaken for a merchandising one.
